چکیده

a Drugs A and B have similar activity. a -l When the effective doses of A and B in combination are located in the area of m+n 1, m> 1, n> 1, they are called par tial antagonism. a -4 When they are located out of the square area, that is, m)1, or n> 1, they are antagonistic. b Drug B does not have the same pharmacological action as drug B. b-1 In the area m 1, they are antagonistic. In the study of the drug-receptor interaction, the analysis of the mode of drug antagonism had been the objects of the principal interests, and the drug-synergism had only been remarked in passing (1). Veldstra (2) mentioned the relation between drug receptor and synergism in his extensive review on "Synergism and Potentiation". A fine definition of synergism and antagonism was proposed by Gaddum as follows. Figure 1 is some modification of that shown in his textbook. In the abscissa a multiple "m" of the effective concetration of the drug A and in the ordinate a multiple "n" of that of the drug B is shown. The synergistic effect is divided into the following

Receptor Agonist Synergism in Obstructive Airway Diseases

For a long time it was believed that 2-adrenergic receptor agonists used in the treatment of obstructive airway diseases worked primarily on airway smooth muscle cells, causing relaxation, whereas glucocorticoids primarily improved airway function via their anti-inflammatory action, indicating that their clinical synergism occurred at the organism rather than the cellular level. However, it is ...

Antimicrobial Effect of Multilayered Carbon Nanotubes on Multi-Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the primary cause of infection with impaired defense mechanisms. P. aeruginosa commonly causes nosocomial infections and is the most common pathogen isolated from patients hospitalized for longer than 1 week. We examined the antimicrobial effect of multilayered carbon nanotubes on multi-drug-resistant. Materials and methods: In this research, 20 clinical i...

The synergistic anti-tumour activity of ICI 182,780 in combination with docetaxel is mediated by P-glycoprotein inhibition

Docetaxel is a semi-synthetic drug that has been shown to be effective in refractory advanced breast cancer. Its main mechanism of action seems to be to block microtubule depolymerisation. In this study we investigated the interaction between docetaxel and the pure anti-oestrogen ICI 182,780 on different oestrogen receptor-negative cancer cells, some of which express the classical multi-drug re...

In vitro interactions of artemisinin with atovaquone, quinine, and mefloquine against Plasmodium falciparum.

The interactions of artemisinin with atovaquone, quinine, and mefloquine were investigated in three Plasmodium falciparum strains (strains F-32, FCR-3, and K-1) by an in vitro culture assay. The parasites were cultured for 48 h in the presence of different concentrations and proportions of two drugs at a time in a checkerboard design. The response parameters were determined, and the sums of the...
